19 Mar Nonprofit View: To support those living with dementia, think beyond memory care
“Chances are, you or someone you know has had their life touched by dementia. A general term for a wide range of symptoms associated with changes in neurocognitive ability, dementia comes in many forms and has many causes, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Parkinson’s disease and frontotemporal dementia, to name a few of the most common. No longer considered a disease of just the elderly, dementia can present in adults of all ages, and people can live with the symptoms for many years.
“At Integrace, we have specialized in providing support to individuals and families living with neurocognitive change for more than 20 years. As research has expanded our understanding of dementia and its complexities, we now know that memory loss is not always the first symptom to appear — and that diagnosis can be a challenging process. To better serve the needs of our community, we recognize a need to rethink our approaches and expand our services.
“Today at Integrace Copper Ridge in Sykesville, we have evolved into a fully integrated community resource providing all levels of neurocognitive care and support, from a renowned diagnostic clinic to residential care. With a positive focus on each person’s existing strengths and abilities, rather than on loss and decline, a more meaningful life is possible for those with dementia.”
